We had a problem that was getting worse. Our property is on a hill bordered on two sides by a road cut, and the slope down to the road was eroding, to the point that the root systems of established trees were exposed. In addition to stabilizing the slope, we wanted to establish a sustainable landscape, populated with native plants, with an authentic Pacific Northwest character.
Matt worked with us to develop a solution that fit our requirements and budget: A rockery foundation, embedded cedar snags, ferns and native shrubs as anchors, and native ground covers to knit everything together (along with a few Rhododendrons, columbines and other flowering cultivars as highlights).
The execution phase of the project was complex and involved excavation, setting dozens of tons of rock, placing snags, embedding irrigation and drainage, shooting yards and yards of soil and top dress, and then setting out trees, shrubs, and plants. Matt has long running personal relationships with his suppliers, which was key to keeping the project moving and on schedule. We always knew what was going to happen next and when, and invoicing tracked execution.
Organic methods are the foundation of Matt’s approach. He educated us in the use of liquid (fish/kelp/compost tea) and granular fertilizers, and the importance of fungi in the landscape (it’s really neat to see successive waves of mushrooms and fungus emerge over the course of a year). Even the snags contribute to the health of the soil as they break down (or are broken down by our local population of pileated woodpeckers and flickers).
As a finishing touch, Matt used a live edge cedar plank to build a display for our house numbers (illuminated at night by a spotlight he wired into our exterior lighting system).
The completed project is (quite literally) the talk of the neighborhood. The slope is stable and the landscape is establishing beautifully. It really stands out because it looks like it’s always been there. Matt was fantastic to work with, he has the skill and expertise to handle complex landscape problems, and he delivers fabulous results.

Matt at EcoWorks Landscaping built a fabulous greenhouse for us designed to be an enclosed garden. He designed and built the greenhouse from scratch. He was very detail oriented and creative. The greenhouse is amazing!! I can plant the vegetables from seeds and they sprout, grow, and provide us with food year round. It really was a long - time dream of mine and I’m so happy to have found Matt who was able to complete the project. Monica Sturman - North Bend
I Highly Recommend EcoWorks Sustainable landscapes based on my recent experience. Matt possesses a unique landscaping vision and brings valuable engineering experience to his projects, which ensures both aesthetic and structural quality. Throughout the process I found him to be clear, visionary, and highly professional. His expertise made the entire collaboration a pleasure, and I am confident in his ability to deliver exceptional results. I strongly recommend his services to anyone seeking organic or sustainable landscaping expertise. Ree Gray, North Bend
Matt Hayes just completed a landscaping project at my home in North Bend. I could not be more pleased. He truly is a landscaping artist, the work he accomplished with my yard has transformed the appearance of my home. I am confident that this investment in the street appeal of my property has added more value to the inevitable sale price of my home than what I invested with Matt. The final cost was exactly what he said it would be from the beginning. He stayed with my project non-stop until final completion and was so easy to work with along the way. Thank you Matt for a great job! Steve Nicholes, North Bend
Matt Hayes was the sole contractor for our ambitious 30 x 30 enclosed, raised bed garden project. I can say without hesitation that Matt’s ingenuity and expertise resulted in a finished product that greatly exceeded our expectations. I am retired, somewhat picky, and over the years have hired many contractors for various house and property projects. I’ve found that many contractors who are exceptional at conceptualization and design, are far less impressive in the actual craftmanship and construction. Conversely, many contractors excel in craftmanship and yet must be closely directed in design and steps to be taken to achieve that design--which almost always falls above my level of expertise and results in projects that are well constructed but leave many visual and functional regrets. I am happy to say that with our garden project Matt went well over and above in all areas—conceptualization, design and construction. We came to Matt with a crude graph paper drawing and a not-quite-what-we-wanted internet picture and he turned it into not only a very high yielding and functional vegetable garden, but a stunning (and I mean garden magazine level stunning) visual highlight to our landscape. Matt listened closely to our initial concepts and immediately grasped what we intended even with the minimal details we provided. He knew what was possible and practical from our wish list and then added many ingenious ideas to that. Upon our design approval he proceeded to craft something well beyond our initial vision. The topper is that Matt very much on board with our natural and organic gardening approach and was able to provide construction materials, an irrigation system, soil and fertilizer that fit our values and made our garden abundantly productive. Finally, I’d like to add that I’ve honestly never seen a harder or more organized and efficient worker than Matt. Thanks to Matt again for the amazing garden he created for us. Needless to say, I highly recommend Matt Hayes to anyone with a similar project. Dave Rispoli, Fall City
